Egyptian Museum

In the heart of Cairo lands one great domed, oddly pinkish building, the Egyptian Museum, where you’ll embark an adventure through eras! In a mind-boggling two-floored-tour, you’d enjoy one of the world’s most important collection of over 120,000 artefacts in an unbelievable exhibition where the fortune of both old & middle kingdoms of ancient Egyptians lies alongside with their mommies. With no chances of an eye-blink, you’d watch treasures of great pharaohs & the Royal tombs of Tanis thematically presented in different language labels since 1902. If housing aged jewelry, potteries, toys & Tutankhamun’s famous funerary gold mask is breathtaking, then you should never miss getting the Royal Mummy room special ticket! Not for the heart-fainted, you’d see the real mummies of Egypt’s most famous pharaohs like Ramses II, Seti I & queen Hatshepsut. Sadly, to know some items went missing in 2011 revolution before the place was saved by loving, human chains!

The citadel and Mohamed Ali mosque

Being the great-grandsons of pharaohs proved to the world that it all exists in egyptian genes. Strawling over a limestone, on a deep slope in the eastern edges of Cairo, stands still the Cairo citadel for over 700 years! Surrounded by high defending gateways, towers & huge-stoned walls, it became one of the most popular, non-pharaonic monument till date. The moment you cross those huge gates, you’d get puzzled by the detailed inscriptions all around the home of 3 great mosques & 4 historical museums, highlighting the citadel’s first-built true gem,The Sultan al-Nasir Muhammad ibn Qalawun Mosque & Muhammad Ali’s Mosque or what’s known as Alabaster Mosque for being carved in one of the finest, & rarest minerals… off to the immense amount of antiquities spotted in the Egyptian Military museum, Al Gawhara Palace museum, the Carriage museum & the Police museum showcasing famous criminal cases such as Raya & Sekina’s… ending up with one of Egypt’s most popular jails & wells! Don’t forget your cams! As couple of terraces view superb Cairo landscapes including the pyramids in clear, sunny days!

The hanging Church

Following the lead of the ancient Egyptians, the Coptic era held another kind of skillfulness! The Hanging Church, or “Al-Muallaqa”; the wooden-basilica shaped roof church resembling Noah’s Ark that dates back to centuries ago, peaking over the top of the Roman fortress gatehouse in Coptic Cairo! Tripping around centuries of re-building this holy place; you’d absolutely go speechless of the magical entrance, leading you to 7 altars all decorated in reliefs & mosaic symbolic representations of Jesus, pops & Virgin Mary, off to her own-dedicated aisle, being the most renowned of the great three aisles existing & separated with marble columns perfectly mixed with wooden roofs! As well, the southern aisle will lead you to real marvel! A small church including a reddish-granite basin decorated in Egyptian hieroglyphic & that still shines since the 5th century! Here’s to another great tip! You shouldn’t be missing Amr Ibn Al-As commandment on one of the walls!

Khan El Khalili Market

The best part in browsing a city is to experience its real culture, to feel the oriental vibes & this is perfectly settled in Cairo, at Khan Al Khalili, the 14th century medieval-styled bazaar! Everything you need to self-gratification is found in a single-long-street walk! From soap powders to handmade carpets! Likewise, the tacky toy camels, spice dealers, souvenirs & coppersmiths along with silver jewelry, clothes, fabrics & even belly dancing costumes! Rambling the small shops all around, you’ll definitely enjoy the small talks with smiling merchants, who will as well, happily lead you to find what you’re looking for if they don’t have it! Transporting back to this period of time, you should never miss having a traditional cup of tea at Cairo’s oldest cafe, Al Fishawi, Naguib Mahfouz’s favorite! Alongside with enjoying Umm Kulthum’s fantastic songs at El-Lord cafe, a boost of oriental-food serving restaurants & exciting spots to shoot colorful memories!

Ben Ezra synagogue

Sultan Hasan & El Rifaie mosques

Following the ancient egyptians gigantic architectures, the mamluks took the lead building a massive, elegant islamic monument, Sultan Hassan Mosque! A 13-year-old boy who ruled Egypt, been deposed & reinstated & who commanded the structure of the great mosque that was unfortunately finished in 4 years yet after he disappeared, for good! With a size, enough to withstand a lot of battering, some constructional challenges were faced leaving behind hundreds of innocent victims. Beyond those huge doors; you’ll pass through an almost-squared court centered with a wooden-dome ablution fountain inscribed with Al-Kursi Verse from Quran, surrounded by four 3-sided-wall liwans, the biggest is the Qibla liwan – each leads to one of the four islamic sunni-schools where people lived & studied… all covered in different types of marbles! Walking few meters aside yet traveling through 500 years, Al Rifai mosque was built by an order of Princess Khushyar, Khedive Ismail’s mother, of almost a twin-look from the outside, the mosque had different architectural taste of marbles!  Tho 2/3 of its size covered by Mamluks tombs & Iran last Shah’s tomb, people usually tend to visit Ali Al Rifai’s tomb, the originally built even before the mosque existence as a belief of getting his blessings!
